"Children on the swing" - by Louis Gan
Brother and Sister on a Swing present both a smiling boy with a little girl standing together on a swing. This beautiful street art was drawn by Louis Gan who is a deaf-mute artist from Balik Pulau, Penang. He is a true talent, he is only 25 years old and never took any actual art classes. He learnt it all from watching videos along with hands-on practice. Louis’ hearing impairment did not become his stumbling block to go after his dreams, in fact, he shows the mettle he is made of. At the age of 16, he won first runner-up during the Malaysian-Japanese Art Competition in the year of 2003. After graduating from secondary education, he carries on his studies with a diploma in Graphic Design.
The owner of Sin Ban Seong (SBS) Paper Product invited Gan to grace the wall of his storehouse after reading about him in the newspaper, Kwong Wah and The Star newspaper. Since the alleyway does not have a name of its own, it was named Step By Step Lane. It is said that the name of this street could be inspired by the SBS Paper Product as the lane and the firm have the same initials which are SBS. Moreover, the two children from the painting are actually the children of SBS owner. This printing firm even invited people who visited this artwork to leave their mark by signing the back door of the warehouse. Now, the rusty backdoor is well decorated.
