Introduction to the module

Summary of the module: 

Culture and civilization is an introduction to the Western and Eastern culture and civilization from prehistoric to present through an overview of archaeological discoveries, ancient monuments, artworks, philosophy and achievement of great leaders.  

The learning objectives of the module are: 

1. To introduce the Western and Eastern culture and civilization through an overview of archaeological discoveries, ancient monuments, artworks, philosophy and achievement of great leaders from prehistoric to present. 
2. To examine the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western civilizations. 
3. To show basic skills on enquiry, investigation, application and presentation of relevant information.

Module learning outcome: 

1. Able to describe the historical development of human civilization. 
2. Able to recall the development of Eastern and Western human civilization in the past as well as present 
3. Able to develop skills of data gathering. 
4. Able to demonstrate good documentation and presentation skills. 

Assessment components : 

Assignment 1: 

Back to Our Root -“What is your Culture” (Group+ Individual) This project introduces students to the elements of culture. They will have to study and investigate the history and culture of their own root and to present their findings through an interactive mind map that will cover historical timeline, people, culture, custom and architecture. 

Assignment 2: 

Place and Identity (Individual) This assignment requires the student to create a travel journal to capture the current/existing culture around Malaysia. The student will need to record their journey of the place of interest and study the people, culture, space and architecture that reflects the identity of the place they visited. The outcome should reflect their observation through sketching, note-taking and photographs. 

Final Project: 

Message from the Past (Group and Individual) The final project will allow students to explore and understand the chosen ancient civilization from a movie given to them. The project will be divided into two parts:
(i) Individually, students are required to choose and study a character from the movie assigned to them. They will need to produce a paper doll and represent information gathered on the character creatively. 
(ii) In groups, students will need to choose a particular culture/custom/ event that is significant during the period chosen from the civilization and demonstrate them in class. This exercise will allow the students to showcase their understanding of the chosen culture/ custom/ event.
